Robert Pattinson’s The Batman appears to be taking its sweet preparation time to heart as it now commits to its second, full-year delay. The Batman 2 (tentative title), will now be releasing on October 2027 instead of October 2026; the initial release date was October 2025. Hence, James Gunn, Superman director, has come to the rescue and offered an explanation to some vengeful Bat-fans.
In a recent post on his Threads account, James Gunn details what went wrong and why The Batman 2 had to be delayed again. Gunn’s primary reasoning was that there’s still no full script for The Batman 2 and even the title is a working title. The Superman director then further points out that even he doesn’t know how long it will take for the script to be finished.
“Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films,” according to James Gunn’s Threads account.
Once the script is done, pre-production, filming, and post-production will take place in a span of two years. Gunn also reassures everyone that The Batman 2 director, Matt Reeves, wants the sequel to be the best it possibly can be, and that will likely take time.
Will Batman Be Joining Superman in the DCU?
Some fans have accused James Gunn of rewriting The Batman 2 script so the character can be integrated into the new DC Universe (DCU), which was kicked off by his Superman. However, James Gunn has admitted that he doesn’t want to bring Matt Reeves’ Batman into the DCU along with his Superman.
Gunn will likely bring in a different version of Batman so that Matt Reeves’ and Robert Pattinson’s Batman can continue with its own story.

Meanwhile, it’s understandable why some fans are aching for The Batman 2. It has been more than two full years since 2022’s The Batman. Moreover, The Batman was both a commercial and critical success, gaining nearly $800 million at the box office and earning praise from even the crankiest of Batman fans thanks to Robert Pattinson’s more grounded take.
