James Gunn’s first entry into his own spin on the DC universe is finally here, and it was a rather successful first flight. Superman has soared to new heights, with its teaser trailer earning more than 250 million views during its first day. It’s only bound to get higher over the weekend, and director James Gunn has credited an unlikely ally in bringing the views up: Krypto the Superdog!
James Gunn is thus celebrating the new take-off for the DC Universe. Note that the Superman trailer was merely a teaser and doesn’t reveal much about the story (though it’s likely going to be familiar already). The big surprise, of course, was Krypto’s appearance.
Superman’s Kryptonian dog hasn’t exactly appeared alongside his owner in live-action format in recent memory. Thus, younger fans can consider the teaser trailer as Krypto’s live-action debut in a more dignified format since he’s actually appearing alongside his owner now in a major role. James Gunn thus knew who to thank for the teaser trailer’s success:
Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros. This is because of all of you: thank you! We’re incredibly grateful and,… pic.twitter.com/Ry3aGA88Zl— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) December 20, 2024
Gunn’s Take on the DC Universe is Off to a Good Start
Of course, Gunn also gave proper credit where it was due. This is a Superman movie, after all, and a big appeal of Krypto is being seen interacting with Superman. James Gunn also thanked the fans because they also made the teaser’s success possible.
Speaking of success, it appears Gunn’s new take on the DC Universe– starting with Superman, is set to revitalize the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) counterpart after Warner Bros.’s earlier attempt. The previous DCEU (DC Extended Universe), once helmed and kicked off by Zack Snyder, more or less fizzled out after failing to reach the same mainstream appeal as the MCU.
Some reports point to studio interference and other complex issues, resulting in a lack of cohesion for the previous DCEU. Hence, fans even called for the “Snyder Cut” or Zack Snyder’s original vision for the Justice League movie.

Additionally, now that the MCU is also getting mixed receptions, it might be high time for a new contender in the superhero film genre. To that end, Gunn’s Superman has struck at the right time while the iron is piping hot and with the added bonus of Krypto’s charm.
